Dark dried malt extract adds extra taste, body and richness. A superb addition to any brown, mild ale or dark ale.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING DRIED MALT EXTRACT?

Spraymalt will improve the quality of any beer kit when used in place of sugar. It will brew beers which are less ‘dry’, with more richness, body and improved head formation and retention.

WHAT IS DRIED MALT EXTRACT?

Malted barley is used to make Dried Malt Extract (DME), also known as spraymalt. A spraying and drying process produces this fine powder. When used in place of sugar in brewing beer, dried malt extract can improve the quality of the beer.

It results in beers that are less ‘dry’, with more richness, body, and improved head formation and retention. Depending on how light or dark it is, it may also add some malt character to the brew.

Dried Malt Extract (also known as spraymalt or DME), is available in Extra LightLightMedium and Dark.

HOW TO USE DRIED MALT EXTRACT

In extract kits, you can use Dried Malt Extract (spraymalt) to replace any needed sugars or in addition to sugar. If replacing sugar, it will be a weight for weight swap. The most common combination is replacing a 1Kg bag of sugar with 500g of malt extract and 500g sugar. This will increase the body, flavour and mouthfeel of your beer. They usually sell this mix as a Beer Kit Enhancer.

You could also replace all the sugar with malt extract. This makes a heavier malty beer – more suited to darker stronger malty beers than pale ales, bitters or lagers. If you want to add 500g of Dried Male Extract as well as your sugar, this will also increase the final abv of the beer.

You can also use Dried Malt Extract as a base if you are making a beer from your own recipe. You will also need to add hops and also grains as per your recipe.

CONVERSION OF LIQUID TO DRIED MALT EXTRACT

Most recipes that call for malt extract normally refer to liquid malt extract (LME) rather than Dried Malt extract (DME). As the Dried Malt Extract has had the water removed, you will not need as much in weight to achieve the same abv and body. To convert liquid Malt Extract to dried Malt extract, multiply the weight by 0.8 to give the desired weight required.

If you have a recipe that states dried malt extract and you want to use liquid malt extract, divide the weight by 0.8.
