Demijohn Safety Cork

This a specially designed cork that fits into glass demijohns or 5 gallon fermenters (any fermenter that can take a standard bung). On top of the cork is a small vent that will allow any gases that build up to be vented safely.

Can these fit plastic demijohns or buckets?

No. The bung is manufactured to fit glass demijohns or 5-gallon wine fermenters. This will replace a solid bung or cork that is usually used for the maturing of wine in bulk.

Can a safety cork replace an airlock?

No. An airlock is designed to allow the large build up of CO2 to be released during fermenting. The small vent would not be sufficient to allow the gas to escape quickly enough. The vent is to release any gas build up during maturing – not fermenting.

Can they be re-used?

Yes. The cork can be used many times. We are still using corks that were made over 12 years ago.
