What is Pilsner Lager?

Pilsner (also pilsener or simply pils) is a type of pale lager. It takes its name from the Czech city of Pilsen, where it was first produced in 1842 by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll from local ingredients. The world’s first blond lager, the original Pilsner Urquell, is still produced there today. For many Pilsner is the perfect beer. Poured into a tall, tapered glass and capped with a fluffy inch of white foam, its brilliant golden hue makes an evocative image. Pilsner manages to be sharp and delicate at the same time. The spicy bite of hops is bold, but not so bold that it overwhelms your palate or the subtle, malty flavours underneath. Pilsner beer is light in colour and may range from light straw to golden colour, depending on the specific Pilsner being brewed. The spicy floral and strong hop flavours of Pilsner have made the style highly popular all around the world. Some of the most popular and iconic beers such as Budweiser and Holsten Pils are made in the Pilsner style. Pilsner’s tend to be drier, and this can be achieved by adding a pilsner enzyme during the fermentation process.

So, when it comes to Pilsner versus Lager, you need to remember that Pilsner is a just a type of Lager, but a bit lighter in colour, slightly drier, and with a strong spicy flavour.

Food Pairing

Pilsner is an extremely versatile food beer. It’s got enough spicy oomph to tackle Thai and other fiery Asian foods, but it also won’t overwhelm more delicate dishes like shellfish or fresh goat cheese. It’s great with burgers or barbecue and perfect with pizza. The hops and carbonation help to keep your palate clean. Pilsner can also be a wonderful accompaniment to light desserts. Pils matches very well with creamy and spicy curries, tandoori dishes, Salmon, and shellfish.

Tips

We strongly recommend using Pure Brew with this kit in order to achieve a commercial quality. Pure Brew is a professional beer enhancer. It feeds the yeast with essential nutrients, which supercharge the fermentation and support yeast development (even in limited oxygen conditions). Pure Brew also treats brewing water to eliminate problems caused by Chlorine and Chloramine (which can create a medicinal or as it is sometimes referred to, a “homebrew” taste) The condition of brewing water is critical to achieving optimum results but this important area is often overlooked. By using Pure Brew, you can effectively and easily condition brewing water, and maximise effective fermentation.

The addition of beer finings will improve the final quality of your beer. Finings such as Harris Beer Brite will help your beer to clear quickly and the sediment will be more likely to stay at the bottom of bottles or barrels. If you are using Corny Kegs then it is important to clear the beer as much as possible before kegging. Beer Finings will promote a faster and more efficient fall out of sediment and haze particles prior to kegging. Harris Starbrite is a highly effective vegan-friendly beer fining, which is rapidly becoming a firm favourite with home brewers.
