Festival Old Suffolk Strong Ale is a high-quality premium 3kg beer kit. Everything you need to brew a superb strong ale is included in the box (except water).  The flavour has a distinctively woody character with an interesting vinous aroma and hints of vanilla. The ale has a good level of dryness and well-balanced sweetness, contributing to its distinctive character. Visually, Old Suffolk Strong Ale has a dark brown colour, with a cappuccino coloured head.

This kit includes a 50g sachet of hop pellets to achieve a stunning hop aroma, and provides a 90g sachet of priming sugar to ensure proper conditioning of bottles or barrels.

Hop bitterness of the Old Suffolk Strong Ale is 3.5 (on a scale of 1-5). The kit produces a target alcohol content of 6% ABV (approx)

The Festival Old Suffolk Strong Ale kit contains high-quality ingredients and easy to follow step-by-step instructions. Each kit makes 40 pints of premium ale

With careful research, help and knowledge from professional brewers, Festival Premium Ale Kits enable you to recreate examples of some of the UK’s best-loved beers, all within the comfort of your own home. Festival Premium Ale Kits use only the very highest quality liquid malt extracts (3kg per kit) and genuine brewer’s yeast strains (all individually suited to each style of beer).

Festival Premium Ale Kits also contain hop pellets and priming sugar. The hop pellets mare simply added halfway through fermentation infusing flavour and aroma into the finished beer resulting in a beer with more hop character than ever before. Including the precisely measured addition of priming sugar ensures the correct level of carbonation is achieved for each particular style of beer.

What is Strong Ale?

Strong ales, also known as old ales, have a higher alcohol content (typically between 5.5-7% ABV) compared to pale ales, although they are not as robust or alcoholic as barley wines.  Usually a deep amber to dark brown colour, these brews generally have a sweet malty palate and a degree of fruitiness. If bottle conditioned, strong ales can improve for several years, in some cases eventually obtaining sherry-like notes.

Tips

Harris Pure Brew - 5 DoseWe strongly recommend using Pure Brew with this kit in order to achieve a commercial quality. Pure Brew is a professional beer enhancer. It feeds the yeast with essential nutrients, which supercharge the fermentation and support yeast development (even in limited oxygen conditions). Additionally, Pure Brew treats brewing water, eliminating problems caused by Chlorine and Chloramine, which can create a medicinal or, as it is sometimes referred to, a “homebrew” taste. Achieving optimum results in brewing critically depends on the condition of brewing water, but this important area is often overlooked. By using Pure Brew, you can effectively and easily condition brewing water, and maximise effective fermentation.

The addition of beer finings will improve the final quality of your beer. Finings such as Harris Beer Brite will help your beer to clear quickly and the sediment will be more likely to stay at the bottom of bottles or barrels. If you are using Corny Kegs then it is important to clear the beer as much as possible before kegging. Beer Finings will promote a faster and more efficient fall out of sediment and haze particles prior to kegging. Harris Starbrite is a highly effective vegan-friendly beer fining, which is rapidly becoming a firm favourite with home brewers.
