What is IPA

IPA stands for India Pale Ale. During the period when Britain ruled the Indian Empire, spoilage issues were encountered when attempting to ship beer over the long distances. The higher temperatures, delays, and travel did not suit normal beers. Brewers found a solution to this problem by creating higher-strength, higher-hop-rate ales, giving rise to the creation of the IPA. We characterize the IPAs we enjoy today with an abundance of hops. Brewers may use several varieties of hops at different times throughout the brewing process. These hops have a significant impact on flavour, aroma, and bitterness. Specifically, IPAs often emit aromas of citrus, pine, or flowers, particularly when American hops are used.

Three main styles of IPA have emerged. They are American-style, English-style, and Double (DIPA) or Imperial. Moreover, IPA’s, especially favoured by younger drinkers who prefer cold, keg-served beer, have become extremely popular. Modern IPAs tend to have ABVs (alcohol by volume) between 5.5 and 7.5 %. Craft breweries are constantly experimenting and creative sub-styles and twists on the classic,  including Black, Hybrid, Wheat, Belgian White IPA, and even Triple IPA (TIPA). Each style and sub-style has its own characteristics.

A new beer classification of “Juicy Hazy” has been created to accommodate New England IPA’s, which are cloudy and pack a powerful tropical hop punch. This proliferation of styles means there is plenty of variety in what falls under the IPA label today… and great choice and experimentation possibilities for the home craft brewer!

Tips

We strongly recommend using Pure Brew with this kit in order to achieve a commercial quality. Pure Brew is a professional beer enhancer. It feeds the yeast with essential nutrients, which supercharge the fermentation and support yeast development (even in limited oxygen conditions). Additionally, Pure Brew treats brewing water, eliminating problems caused by Chlorine and Chloramine, which can create a medicinal or, as it is sometimes referred to, a “homebrew” taste. Achieving optimum results in brewing critically depends on the condition of brewing water, but this important area is often overlooked. By using Pure Brew, you can effectively and easily condition brewing water, and maximise effective fermentation.

The addition of beer finings will improve the final quality of your beer. Harris Beer Brite finings, for example, will aid in the quick clarification of your beer, with the sediment more likely to remain at the bottom of bottles or barrels. For those using Corny Kegs, it is crucial to clear the beer as much as possible before kegging. Beer finings will promote a faster and more efficient settling of sediment and haze particles prior to kegging. Harris Starbrite is a highly effective vegan-friendly beer fining, which is rapidly becoming a firm favourite with home brewers.
