Description
Yeast Nutrient for Wine and Cider
Yeast Nutrient is basically a food for the yeast. It provides nitrogen for essential yeast growth whilst the phosphate ensures a vigorous fermentation.
Why you need yeast nutrient.
Yeast, like all other living cells, needs nitrogen as well as oxygen to enable it to grow and thrive. Fresh fruits generally contain nitrogen, though winemakers greatly dilute it when adding water during the wine-making process. To enhance yeast growth and facilitate the production of enzymes essential for the fermentation process, it is always recommended to add some nutrient. This is essential if you want to produce a good sound wine.
What types of nutrient are used?
This yeast nutrient uses an equal blend of di-ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulphate. These are the best nutrients to use as they release the essential nitrogen needed for a healthy fermentation as well as helps with the blending of some of the proteins. The 2 nutrients combined provide a better food for the yeast than just a single type, and help avoid a stuck fermentation.
What is the dose rate?
The recommended dosage for yeast nutrient is 1 teaspoon (5g) per 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of wine.
